MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team has won eight of its last 10 games, and a loss to No. 10 Midland University Sunday snapped the Tigers’ three-game winning streak.
It’s no coincidence that, throughout DWU’s winning streak, Jalen Voss has been a mainstay at the top of the Tigers’ score sheet every night. He led the team in scoring in 10 of the Tigers’ past 13 games, including each of Dakota Wesleyan’s last three games.
Voss, a 6-foot-7 junior forward, led DWU in scoring in its upset victory over receiving votes Briar Cliff, and scored a team-high again Sunday in the Tigers’ loss to Midland. He also led the team in rebounding Sunday, and was perfect from the free-throw line on the week. For his two big games, Voss has been named the Great Plains Athletic Conference Player-of-the-Week, it was announced Tuesday morning by the league.
Voss started the week with 23 points and eight rebounds in DWU’s 84-81 win over Briar Cliff. He went 8-for-11 from the field and 7-for-7 from the line, and he also had three assists. Sunday, Voss, a Worthington, Minn., native, had 26 points and eight rebounds as the Tigers fell 82-71 to the Warriors. He went 9-for-16 from the field and 7-for-7 from the line. In two games this past week, he averaged 24.5 points, eight rebounds, two assists and went 14-for-14 from the line.
This marks the first weekly GPAC honor of Voss’ career. He earned NAIA Honorable Mention All-American honors as a sophomore in 2012-13, and was named the league’s co-Freshman-of-the-Year in 2011-12.
Voss and the Tigers (13-9, 6-6) are back at home Wednesday, Jan. 29, when they host Morningside College – which is receiving votes in the NAIA – at 8 p.m. at the Corn Palace.
