MITCHELL, S.D. – Runs came at a premium between Dakota Wesleyan University and rival Mount Marty College in a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader as the visitors left with a 5-0 and 4-3 victories at Cadwell Park in Mitchell, S.D.
In Game One, the Lancers (13-23, 7-11 GPAC) opened up the scoring in the second inning with a run and widened the gap in the fifth inning with four runs. The Tigers (15-20, 10-7 GPAC) could not find their rhythm in the first game as they fell 5-0.
Patrick Whetham (Garretson, S.D.) pitched five innings, allowing five earned runs off 10 hits and struck out four batters. He was relieved by Braiden Jorgensen (Tetonia, Idaho) who allowed one run in two innings.
The Lancers started Game Two with a four-run first inning. The Tigers answered with runs by Reed Harter (Colome, S.D.), Waddle and Jared Neilan (Pierre, S.D.) in the fourth inning to put themselves within striking distance. However, the comeback fell short as DWU lost 4-3.
Brody Kunzmann (Sioux Falls, S.D.) led the way going 2-for-3 with an RBI, as Harter went 1-for-3 with a run.
Freshman Dominique Boerger (Milbank, S.D.) went the distance and took the loss, tossing seven innings, allowing four earned runs off eight hits, while striking out four.
The Tigers head north as they take on NCAA Division I opponent North Dakota State University with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, N.D.
