    February 7, 2012

    Alex Davis

MITCHELL, S.D. – Dakota Wesleyan University first-year head softball coach Ed Kieff seems to have established a recruiting pipeline from the West Coast to Mitchell, S.D. Three of the Tigers’ first seven recruits for 2013 were from California, and Tuesday afternoon Kieff announced his eighth recruit for next season – also from California.

Alex Davis, a Chula Vista, Calif., native, will play infield for Dakota Wesleyan starting in 2013. She is the fourth California native to sign with DWU this offseason. Davis is a four-time letter winner at Eastlake High School in Chula Vista. She was named the team’s Offensive Player-of-the-Year as a freshman in 2009 and earned Union Tribune Athletic Honors in 2011. Davis, who plans to major in education, also plays third base for the San Diego Elite 18U team.

“We are extremely excited to announce the signing of Alex to this recruiting class,” Kieff said. “She will add a lot of power to our lineup and add depth to our infield. She is another high GPA student who understands the game and is really looking forward to college.”

Other California natives who have signed with DWU this offseason are outfielder Meghan Bovee (San Diego); pitcher Brianna Onstad (Sacramento) and utility player Lindy Snook (Temecula). Davis also joins infielder/outfielder Laura Erickson (Sioux Falls, S.D.), shortstop and utility player Cassie Fink (Norfolk, Neb.), catcher and utility player Kelsey Newman (Columbus, Neb.) and catcher Hailey Unger (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada).

The Tigers start the 2012 season Saturday, Feb. 11, when they travel to Sioux City, Iowa, for three indoor scrimmages against Great Plains Athletic Conference opponents. DWU plays its first game of the season Friday, Feb. 24, when it travels to Salina, Kan., to take on Kansas Wesleyan University.

“We start our 2012 season this weekend with three scrimmages, and the team is really looking forward to getting started,” Kieff said. “They have worked very hard this winter and I think we will have a lot of fun this spring.”
