Tigers drop weekend series to Benedictine

ATCHISON, Kan. – For the second weekend in a row, the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team headed south for a four-game stand as they took on Benedictine College on Saturday and Sunday in Atchison, Kan.

The Tigers (4-4) dropped all four games by scores of 3-2, 6-4, 7-3 and 22-6.

The opening game of the weekend was a pitcher's duel as the teams combined for 12 strikeouts in the game. The Ravens (14-2) took a 1-0 lead in the second frame after a solo homerun was struck over the right field fence. Just one inning later BC hit another homerun, this time a two-run homer to extend its advantage to 3-0.

After a scoreless fourth and fifth innings, DWU attempted a rally in the sixth inning. Cole Hellie (Phoenix, Ariz.) knocked a hit to shallow right-center field as he brought two runs home thanks to a wild throw by the Ravens. However, this was all the closer the Tigers got as the late rally fell short in the 3-2 contest.

The second game of Saturday saw a few more runs but was just as close. After scoring a run in each of the first two innings, BC tallied two homeruns in the bottom of the third frame to push its lead to four runs. One inning later the Ravens added another homerun with a two-run shot to left field to make it a 6-0 game.

Much the same as the first game, DWU attempted a late rally. In the top of the sixth frame Jacob Hammons (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) connected on an RBI double to put the Tigers on the scoreboard. After a pitching change by the Ravens, Luke LeMay (St. Paul, Minn.) drove a run home after a single through the hole at second base.

With one inning to play, Jared Jones (Edmond, Okla.) scored off a BC error. A few batters later Drew DeMers (Winner, S.D.) singled to left field to bring one run home. The comeback fell short as the Tigers dropped the second game on Saturday.

In the first game on Sunday, Benedictine jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the first two innings. Kalub Carmichael (Howard, S.D.) came home in the third inning to give the Tigers their first run of the game. However, four runs in the sixth inning by the Ravens helped them seal the game.

In the final game of the weekend, the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after Hammons nailed a two-run homerun to kick off the game. A few batters later, Wyatt Hunt (Rapid City, S.D.) hit an RBI double to deep center field.

The Ravens responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame, while tacking on six runs in the bottom of the second inning. Benedictine notched 10 runs in the sixth frame to secure the final game of the weekend.

Hammons finished the weekend 5-for-15 with four RBIs and three runs scored, while DeMers tallied a hit in every game and recorded two runs scored. Ethan Davis (Billings, Mont.) opened the weekend as he pitched six innings and recorded four strikeouts.

The Tigers take on William Penn University in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. in Crete, Neb.
