JAMESTOWN, N.D. – In a battle of future Great Plains Athletic Conference foes, it was the home team coming out on top as the University of Jamestown topped the No. 10 Dakota Wesleyan University men's basketball team 82-78 on Wednesday in Jamestown, N.D.
The Tigers jumped out to a 20-8 lead after Ty Hoglund (Dell Rapids, S.D.) hit a layup that was soon followed by a jumper from senior Jason Spicer (Sioux Falls, S.D.) DWU eventually grew its lead to as much as 17 points with 7:49 to play in the half, but the Jimmies would not go away as they trailed by eight points just five minutes later. Jamestown cut the deficit to four points heading into the locker room.
The Jimmies (6-2) took their first lead of the game at the 17:05 mark and led for the next three minutes until Spicer added another jumper. For the rest of the game, it was a back-and-forth affair, however the Tigers found an opening with a five-point lead, thanks to a layup by Aaron Ahmadu (Houston, Texas).
DWU had a chance to take the lead back with under two minutes to play, but it was the Jimmies that knocked in two free throws to seal the victory.
Spicer finished with 26 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Trae Vandeberg (Madison, S.D.) added 14 points and eight rebounds. Nygel Drury (Madison, Wis.) had 14 points and Hoglund tallied 10 points and four assists.
