Tigers close weekend in Aberdeen

ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team finished 1-2 for the second straight day at the Dome Tournament on Sunday in Aberdeen, S.D., on the campus of Presentation College.

The Tigers took game one from Waldorf College (Iowa) after scoring seven runs in the first three innings. DWU tacked on four more, defeating Waldorf 11-3.

Against the Warriors, the DWU bats came alive, recording 19 hits. Freshman Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.) continued her dominant weekend going 3-for-4 at the plate. Haage laced two doubles and added a home run to her stat line, while also picking up three RBI's.

Starting third baseman Claudia Nixon (Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, Canada) went 3-for-4 in the contest. Four additional Tigers picked up two hits, including a 2-for-3 game from senior Meghan Bovee (San Diego, Calif.) who also smashed a home run. Katelyne Dougherty (Maui, Hawaii), Alyssa Green (Mitchell, S.D.) and Kylah Spangler (Holbrook, Ariz.) had multi-hit performances.

Haage picked up her first career win on the mound, tossing six innings, giving up three runs on nine hits, while striking out five.

In game two, DWU went into extra innings for the first time of the season, dropping a close 7-6 contest to Valley City State University.

The Tigers jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead, but two runs in the fourth and sixth innings from the Vikings was enough to hold DWU back. VCSU picked up a run in the 10th to seal the victory.

Freshman Savannah Ahumada (Turlock, Calif.) added three more hits to her multi-hit weekend, going 3-for-5 with three RBI's. Seniors Hailey Hunger (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) and Katy Lazenby (Mitchell, S.D.) each went 1-for-5 with Lazenby picking up a double and an RBI.

Junior pitcher Lorissa Loeppky (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) took the loss on the mound, throwing five innings, allowing three runs on four hits.

In the final game of the weekend, host school Presentation College jumped out to a four-run lead and held off a Tiger rally. DWU answered with two runs in the third and a run in the fourth, but two insurance runs in the sixth led the Saints to victory over the Tigers 6-3.

Freshman standout Ahumada was the lone Tiger to have two hits against the Saints, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Mitchell native Hallie Misiaszek added an RBI, going 1-for-3 at the plate. The Tigers stranded nine runners on base in the contest.

Misiaszek threw six innings, allowing six runs on three hits and striking out two. The loss went to redshirt-junior Kelly Taylor (Dublin, Calif.).

DWU finished the weekend with a 2-4 record and are 2-8 on the season, with more than three weeks off until the Tigers home for three weeks before the team's home opener against Southwest Minnesota State University March 16 at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
