RV Men’s Wrestling Falls to NCAA Division II Southwest Minnesota State via Criteria

MARSHALL, Minn. — RV Dakota Wesleyan squared off against Southwest Minnesota State in the first dual meet of the season.

The dual meet started at the 141-pound weight class, which saw true freshman Ian Metz get to work on Richins of SMSU. Metz would score multiple takedowns and fend off a late comeback from Richins to claim a 14-10 victory by decision, giving DWU a 3-0 lead to open the meet. Dakota Wesleyan fell in the 149 and 157-pound weight classes, with Messner defeating Landon Flogstad via a 17-4 major decision, and Condezo defeating Tyson Johnson by an 8-2 decision, but rebounded in the 165-pound weight class as Lane Miller dominated his match. The redshirt-junior claimed a 14-3 major decision victory over Pollar of SMSU to tie the team score back up at 7-7, along with kicking off a three-match win streak as Jagger Tyler and Teagan Foreman won their matches at 174 and 184. Tyler won his match by a commanding 12-3 major decision against Wiezorek, while Foreman controlled the pace of his match to defeat Buss via 10-5 decision.

The Mustangs surged in the back portion of the match with three-straight wins in the 197, heavyweight, and 125-pound weight classes to take a 19-13 lead on the team scoreboard. Jaxon Quail battled against Kenworthy of SMSU, but fell by decision at a 10-5 scoreline, while Cole Hennings scrapped with Thompson in a lower-scoring affair, but also lost by decision, 7-3. Kipp Cordes put up a dominant performance in the final match of the evening at 133 pounds, winning by technical fall in 6:30, 17-2, knotting the team score up at 19-19 to end the match. The pinfall by St. Germain for SMSU over Jaxson Irvine at the 125-pound weight class proved to be the final criterion for deciding the match winner, with the tied scoreline, however, giving SMSU the win, 20-19.
